THOMPKINS LEADS MEN’S BASKETBALL TO VICTORY OVER DOMINICAN

11/25/2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Senior Cedric Thompkins tallied 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Sacramento State basketball team to a 76-65 victory over Dominican in the Hornets’ home opener Tuesday evening at the Hornets Nest.

Thompkins, who shot 4-of-7 from the field while knocking down four free throws, posted the fifth double-double of his career and first since the 2001-02 season. Seniors Joel Jones (13 points, 5-of-9 shooting) and Joseth Dawson (11 points, 2-of-4 three-pointers) rounded out the Hornets with double figures in points. Junior Jameel Pugh added eight points and 10 rebounds, marking the first time since Feb. 13, 1999, against Eastern Washington that two Hornets finished with double-figure rebounds in the same game (Sean Houston-12, Antoine Bailey-10).

With the victory, Sacramento State improves to 1-1 on the young season while Dominican falls to 3-3. The Hornets shot 44.1 percent (26-59) from the field and 38.9 percent (7-18) from the three-point line while forcing Dominican into 18 turnovers.

In the first half, the Hornets jumped out to an early 7-3 lead on consecutive lay-ups by sophomore Chris Lange and Jones. After Dominican took a brief 13-12 lead with 10:15 remaining, Sacramento State went back in front and led by 10 points (32-22) after a 7-0 run capped off by a running jumper from junior E.J. Harris.

The Hornets took a 32-26 lead into the break, before Dominican opened the second half on a 10-3 run to take its only lead of the second half (36-35) with 15:13 remaining. The Hornets responded with a 12-2 run, highlighted by a Jones dunk, to lead by nine points (47-38) with 11:30 to play. The Penguins closed to within four points of the Hornet lead, but would get no closer the rest of the night.

Sacramento State’s largest lead of the night was 15 points (74-59 with 43 seconds left) after Pugh followed a missed jumper from Jones with his second dunk of the night. Dominican’s largest lead of the game was two points (11-9) early in the first half.

The Penguins were led by Marcus Williams’ team-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Dominican shot just 30.6 percent (19-62) from the field and missed 18 three-pointers (6-24). Sacramento State continued its struggles from the free-throw line (17-29) as the Hornets are now shooting 58.5 percent (24-41) from the charity stripe this season.

Four Hornets had at least seven rebounds, comprising Pugh, Thompkins, senior Tony Champion (eight) and Jones (seven). The team also tallied 11 steals, including a team-high three from sophomore DaShawn Freeman.

A total of 11 Hornet players appeared in the game, including Jones’ team-high 34 minutes.

Sacramento State returns to action this Saturday, Nov. 29, as the team travels south to take on Cal State Fullerton at 7:05 p.m. The Hornets return home on Tuesday, Dec. 2, to face San Jose Christian.
