MEN'S BASKETBALL WELCOMES PORTLAND STATE ON THURSDAY

Five days after falling on the road at Portland State by an 86-80 score, Sacramento State welcomes the Vikings to The Nest on Thursday, Feb. 3…tipoff is 7:05 p.m…last Saturday, Portland State built a 42-24 halftime lead before Sacramento State stormed back and made a game of it late…in that game, the Hornets scored a season-high 56 points in the second half and grabbed a season-best 17 offensive rebounds (scoring 18 second-chance points)…the loss snapped the Hornets’ two-game winning streak, the program’s longest Big Sky Conference winning streak since the 2006-07 season…the Hornets are 5-5 at home this season, including victories over Eastern Washington (57-55) and Idaho State (74-63) in their last two games inside the friendly confines…the loss at Portland State on Saturday was just another in a series of close losses suffered by the Hornets this season…Sacramento State (5-16, 2-8) is now 2-8 in games that have gone to overtime, or been decided by six points or less…that includes a program-record four overtime losses…Thursday’s game is a big one if the Hornets want to keep their Big Sky Tournament playoff chances alive…the top six teams in the nine-member league advance to the conference’s postseason event, and Sacramento State sits 2.5 games back of a playoff spot with only six league games remaining…Portland State (11-10, 4-5) is 1-7 on the road this season with its lone win coming at Weber State by a 71-69 score…forward Phillip Thomas, who was averaging 8.3 points per game heading into last weekend, scored a career-high 29 points on 9-of-16 shooting Saturday against the Hornets…Portland State, which was playing without a pair of its big men due to injury, was outrebounded by a 40-33 margin by the Hornets…Thursday’s contest can be seen live and free via webcast at www.bigskytv.org…the game can be heard live locally on KRJY 1240 AM, and on the internet at www.hornetsports.com with play-by-play announcer Steve McElroy calling the action...live stats for the game are available at www.hornetsports.com.
