MEN’S BASKETBALL FINALIZES RECRUITING CLASS WITH THE SIGNING OF COSUMNES RIVER POST PLAYER JOSH McCARVER

5/26/2010

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State head men’s basketball coach Brian Katz and his staff finalized their 2010-11 recruiting class with the inking of 6-foot-9, 235-pound post player Josh McCarver today. McCarver, who is the seventh player to sign with Sacramento State for the 2010-11 season, will enroll as a junior at the University in the fall of 2010.

Of the eight players to sign with Sacramento State, McCarver is one of two post players, along with two forwards, one wing, one combo guard, a shooting guard and a point guard.

McCarver, who is a native of Las Vegas, played the last two seasons at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento. He was a first team all-Big 8 Conference selection last year after helping the team to a final ranking of third in the state, a conference championship, a 23-6 overall record and a 12-2 league mark. He averaged 6.8 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots per game, while shooting 63.2 percent (74-117) from the field.

He led the Big 8 Conference in both field goal percentage and rebounds, and ranked third in blocked shots. Ninety of his 232 rebounds came on the offensive glass, an average of 3.5 per game. During the season, he had four double-doubles, and grabbed double figures in rebounds on 12 occasions. One of those games came against Modesto Junior College where he had 10 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks. As a freshman (2008-09), he averaged 2.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots per game. The blocks ranked as the fifth best mark in the conference.

“Josh is a long and athletic player that plays above the rim and will block shots,” Katz said. “He will add a degree of front line athleticism that will help the team, and he has a chance to blossom and become a player that will help us win.”

McCarver prepped at Green Valley High School in Henderson, Nev., where he played four years for the basketball team. During his senior season (2007-08), he was team captain and averaged a double-double. As a junior, he helped lead the Gators to a semifinal appearance in the state tournament.

McCarver joins Zach Nelson (Arizona Western College forward), Heath Hoffman (Sauk Valley Community College wing), Konner Veteto (UC Riverside post), Antoine Proctor (Sheridan College combo guard), Kendell Groom (Hyde Leadership High School point guard) and Jackson Carbajal (Buchanan High School shooting guard) as the seven players to sign with the Hornets. Carbajal was signed during the early period, while the other six players have signed over the last six weeks.
