SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men’s basketball coaching staff remained busy, signing their sixth player in less than a month’s time when it was announced today that forward Casper Hesseldal has signed to play with the Hornets, and will enroll as a junior at the University in the fall of 2010.
Hesseldal, who is a 6-foot-6, 220-pound native of Aarhus, Denmark, played the last two seasons at Northwest College in Powell, Wyo. A two-year starter and a two-time second team all-Region 9 selection for the Trappers, Hesseldal played in 62 games during his two-year stay at Northwest (51 starts), while averaging 14.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game. He shot 54.5 percent (341-626) from the field, 37.5 percent (39-104) from the three-point line and 68.9 percent (146-212) from the free-throw line during his two years.
This past season, he helped lead the squad to a quarterfinal appearance in the Region IX Tournament after averaging 13.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. He shot 57.2 percent (178-311) from the field, 43.6 percent (17-39) from beyond the three-point line and averaged 3.3 trips to the free throw line per game, converting on 68.2 percent (73-107) of those opportunities. Hesseldal was among the top two Trappers in starts, field goals made, field goals attempted, field goal percentage, three-point percentage and rebounds.
“Casper is a versatile and athletic player who can play multiple positions on the floor (shooting guard, small forward, power forward),” Sacramento State head coach Brian Katz said. “He is very long and athletic, and has a lot of bounce. In addition, he will be a matchup problem for opponents, because at his size, he can post up a smaller guy and drive from the perimeter against a bigger defender.”
In August of 2009, Hesseldal played four games for the Danish National Team at the European Championships. Among those games was a contest against Austria where he had four points, three rebounds and a steal in 10 minutes. He moved from Denmark to the United States in 2007 prior to his senior year at Glenwood High School in Glenwood City, Wis.
Hesseldal joins Zach Nelson (Arizona Western College forward), Heath Hoffman (Sauk Valley Community College guard/forward), Konner Veteto (UC Riverside forward/center), Antoine Proctor (Sheridan College combo guard), Kendell Groom (Hyde Leadership High School point guard) and Jackson Carbajal (Buchanan High School shooting guard) as the seven players to sign with the Hornets thus far. Carbajal was signed during the early period, while the other six players have signed over the last month.
