MEN’S BASKETBALL SIGNS SAUK VALLEY PERIMETER PLAYER HEATH HOFFMAN
5/3/2010
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State head coach Brian Katz announced the program’s fifth signee of its 2010-11 recruiting class with the inking of 6-foot-4, 195-pound wing Heath Hoffman. He will enroll as a junior at Sacramento State in the fall of 2010.
Hoffman, who is a left-handed shooter, played his sophomore season (2009-10) at Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, Ill., and his freshman year (2008-09) at Highland Community College in Freeport, Ill. He was a teammate of current Hornet forward Duro Bjegovic while playing at Highland.
A native of Winnebago, Ill., Hoffman was a first team all-Arrowhead Conference selection and the league’s leading scorer at Sauk Valley after averaging 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He went to the free throw line 161 times (5.8 attempts per game), and converted on 70.1 percent of those opportunities (113 makes). He also shot 43.4 percent (145-334) from the field and knocked down 47 three-pointers. Hoffman scored in double figures in 25 of 28 games, including a performance against Kishwaukee College where he had 28 points, six rebounds and four assists.
At Highland, Hoffman was part of a team that went 31-6 overall, placed seventh at the NJCAA Men’s Div. I National Basketball Tournament and won the District IV, Region IV and Arrowhead Conference championships. That season, he averaged 6.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 0.6 steals per game.
“Heath can play multiple positions on the perimeter, and he’s a very physical player that can score,” Katz said. “Besides averaging 16 points, he grabbed nearly five rebounds per game, which is very impressive for a 6-foot-4 perimeter player. He gets to the free throw line, has a very good understanding of the game and really has a chance to help us win games.”
Hoffman prepped at Winnebago High School in Illinois, where he was a three-year varsity starter, two-time all-state selection, and three-time first team all-Big Northern Conference choice. A unanimous first team selection during both his junior and senior seasons, he helped Winnebago to three straight regional championships (2005-08) and a 2006 sectional title. During his senior year, he averaged 20.1 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game for a team that finished with a 25-3 record. As a junior, Hoffman posted averages of 21.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
Hoffman joins Konner Veteto (UC Riverside forward/center), Antoine Proctor (Sheridan College combo guard), Kendell Groom (Hyde Leadership High School point guard) and Jackson Carbajal (Buchanan High School shooting guard) as the five players to sign with the Hornets thus far.
