4/29/2010
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State head coach Brian Katz announced the program’s fourth signee of its 2010-11 recruiting class with the inking of 6-foot-9, 240-pound post player Konner Veteto. A transfer from UC Riverside, Veteto will have to redshirt this year due to NCAA transfer rules, and will become eligible to play in 2011-12.
A local product from Auburn, Calif., Veteto played in 51 games (12 starts) the past two seasons for the Highlanders. During those two seasons, he averaged one rebound every 3.5 minutes of play, combining to post 3.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 12.6 minutes per game while shooting 50.8 percent (66-130) from the field. Of his 183 career rebounds, 71 have come on the offensive glass.
As a sophomore in 2009-10, he started the first eight games of the season, including a game against Sacramento State where he had six points and six rebounds in 20 minutes. Veteto tallied seven points and a career-high 13 rebounds at New Mexico in the season opener, and followed that with a team-best 14 points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes at USC. In the nine games he started during the season, Veteto averaged 6.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
He finished his sophomore season with averages of 3.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting 44.9 percent (35-78) from the field. Veteto averaged one rebound every 3.4 minutes of play, grabbing at least eight rebounds in each of the first three games of the season.
As a freshman, he tallied averages of 3.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 11.6 minutes per game while shooting 59.6 percent (31-52) from the field. His season highs in points (15) and rebounds (11) both came against Cal Poly.
“We’re getting a player in Konner who has two years of Div. I experience, and has had some success at this level,” Katz said. “He is a big and physical player who has a chance to be very good. He is a force on the glass, and can really rebound the basketball. We’ll develop him this year, and get two solid years of play (in 2011-12 and 2012-13).”
Veteto prepped at Placer High School in Auburn, Calif., where he was a two-time first team all-league selection. He helped the Hillmen post a combined 39-18 record during his final two seasons, and participated in the Sac vs. Bay Showdown which features the top high school basketball players in Northern California. Veteto also competed in track and volleyball, and qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Championhips in the shotput.
Veteto joins Antoine Proctor (Sheridan College combo guard), Kendell Groom (Hyde Leadership High School point guard) and Jackson Carbajal (Buchanan High School shooting guard) as the four players to sign with the Hornets thus far.
