FORMER MEN’S HOOPS PLAYERS JONES AND ALAMO FALL JUST SHY OF PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

8/5/2009

QUEBRADILLAS, Puerto Rico -- Former Sacramento State men’s basketball players Joel Jones and Angel Alamo, who are now teammates with the Quebradillas Pirates of the National Superior Basketball League of Puerto Rico, fell just shy of winning the league’s title earlier this week.

Quebradillas fell in a best-of-seven series, 4-2, to the Bayamon Vacqueros in the league’s championship round. The team had advanced to the final round after knocking off the Carolina Gigantes, 4-2, in the semifinals.

During the championship series, Jones averaged 15.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals while starting all six games. Alamo appeared in five games, averaging 3.8 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.

The pair helped Quebradillas become one of just four teams in the league to reach the playoff round. Jones finished the regular season with averages of 16.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 blocked shots in 32.2 minutes per game. He shot 48.0 percent from the field, 38.0 percent from the three-point line and 81.0 percent from the free throw line.

Alamo, who was playing his first professional season in Puerto Rico, finished the regular season with averages of 4.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 13.0 minutes per game while shooting 36.0 percent from the field and a team-best 92.0 percent from the free throw line.

Jones, who has compiled perhaps the most impressive professional career of any former Hornet basketball player, has played for seven teams overseas and won a silver medal with the Puerto Rican National Team at the 2007 Pan American Games. He played for Sacramento State in 2001-02 and 2003-04 (redshirt in 2002-03) and was named all-conference both years. Jones finished his Hornet career with averages of 12.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 0.8 blocked shots per game. Jones played with Bayamon during the summers of both 2002 and 2003 prior to his collegiate career coming to a close.

In his only season at Sacramento State (2006-07), Alamo appeared in all 29 games, including 17 starts (fourth most on the team). That year, he posted averages of 9.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 0.7 blocked shots in 23.3 minutes per game while shooting 48.1 percent (111-231) from the field and 82.1 percent (64-78) from the free throw line.

Other former Hornets to play overseas last season included Jason Davis
(Portugal), Pablo Gonzales (Belgium), Haron Hargrave (Romania), Sean Houston (Australia) and Davon Roberts (Germany).
