MEN’S BASKETBALL SIGNS DIABLO VALLEY COLLEGE’S ANTONIO FLAGGS
4/23/2008
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Despite being on campus for just two weeks, new Sacramento State head men’s basketball coach Brian Katz announced today that a second player has signed with the program – 6-3, 180-pound swingman Antonio Flaggs of Diablo Valley College. He will enroll at Sacramento State as a junior in the fall.
Last season, Flaggs, who hails from Pittsburg, Calif., was the team co-captain and second-leading scorer for a Diablo Valley College squad that won the Big 8 Conference championship with a 26-8 overall record and a 13-1 conference mark. Flaggs averaged 12.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 0.9 steals per game while shooting 41.2 percent (140-340) from the field, 37.6 percent (73-194) from the three-point line and 74.8 percent (86-115) from the free throw line.
He played in all 34 of the Vikings’ games while averaging 2.1 made three-pointers per game (easily a team high) and 3.4 free throw attempts per game. Flaggs ranked among the top three players on the team in points, field goals, three-pointers, free throws, assists, blocked shots and steals. Against conference competition, he was the team’s leading scorer at 13.7 points per game, including 39.2 percent (29-74) from beyond the three-point arc.
Flaggs can play both the point and shooting guard positions, as well as small forward.
“Antonio is a winner who comes from one of the best junior college programs in the state,” Katz said. ”He can shoot the ball well, is very long and athletic, and is a quality kid. We’re recruiting players from winning programs, and signing Antonio is consistent with that model.”
Flaggs spent his freshman season (2006-07) at Humboldt State, where he played in 17 games for a team that finished 26-4 overall and won the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship with a 19-3 record.
He prepped at Mount Diablo High School in Concord, Calif., where he was a four-year member of the varsity squad and a three-time all Diablo Foothill League selection (first team as junior and senior). During his senior season (2005-06), he led the league with an average of 26.0 points per game. As a junior, he was the second-leading scorer in the league (17.1 points per game) while also averaging 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.0 blocked shots per game.
Flaggs is the second signee of the 2008-09 recruiting class, and Katz still has three remaining scholarships available. Delta College forward Aaron Wilson signed with Sacramento State last week. Katz was hired on April 10 to take over a Sacramento State team that finished the 2007-08 season with a 4-24 overall record and a 2-14 mark in the Big Sky Conference.
