HARGRAVE DRAFTED IN SIXTH ROUND BY THE CBA’S ALBANY PATROONS

9/26/2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Haron Hargrave, who led Sacramento State in scoring last season and finished his two-year Hornet career averaging 11.0 points per game, was a sixth round draft pick and the 59th overall selection in the Continental Basketball Association’s (CBA) annual draft by the Albany Patroons late Tuesday evening.

Hargrave becomes the second Sacramento State player to be drafted by a CBA team, joining DaShawn Freeman who was selected in the fifth round by the Butte Daredevils last year. In addition, since Sacramento State head coach Jerome Jenkins took over the head coaching duties at Sacramento State in 2000-01, Hargave will become his 12th former player to sign a professional contract.

The CBA, which encompasses 10 teams from around the country, begins its season on Nov. 16. The Patroons will play a 49-game schedule with 22 game at home and 27 on the road. The oldest professional basketball league in the world, the CBA was formed on April 23, 1946, preceding the NBA by a month and a half.

The Patroons (located in Albany, N.Y.) originally entered the CBA as an expansion franchise in the 1982-83 season, and later became one of the CBA’s most popular franchises. In fact, Phil Jackson, who won NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, was the Patroons’ head coach during the team’s CBA championship season in 1984. In addition, in 1988, the Patroons won a second championship, this time under head coach Bill Musselman. Other NBA coaches and players who previously played or coached for the Patroons include George Karl, Rick Carlisle, Mario Elie, Vince Askew and Michael Curry.

Hargrave, who is originally from Queens, N.Y., completed his two-year Sacramento State career with averages of 11.0 points, 1.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 4.4 free throw attempts per game. Despite playing just two years with the Hornets (after transferring from Chaffey Junior College), Hargrave ranks fifth in free throws made (201) and seventh in free throws attempted (247) in the program’s Div. I history (1991-pres.).

This past season, Hargrave led the Hornets in points (13.8 per game), free throws (119), free throws attempted (145) and free throw percentage (.821). His 145 free throws made were the fifth most in the nine-team Big Sky Conference and he also ranked fourth in the league with 1.8 steals per game. That included eight steals against Illinois State, tying him for the second highest mark in program single-game history.

He led the Hornets in scoring a team-best 10 times last season, including five games with at least 20 points and a pair of 30-point efforts. He scored in double figures 17 times, and among Big Sky leaders, ranked third in free throw percentage, fourth in steals, ninth in three-pointers (1.9 per game), 11th in scoring and 12th in minutes (29.3 per game).

The 10 teams in the CBA include the Albany Patroons, Minot Sky Rockets, Pittsburgh Xplosion, Atlanta Krunk, East Kentucky Miners, Butte Daredevils, Oklahoma Cavalry, Yakama Sun Kings, Great Falls Explorers and the Rio Grande Valley Sliverados. The Vancouver Dragons will join the league in 2008-09.

Other players selected by Albany include Coby Karl (Boise State, first round), Chris Richard (Florida, second round), Dwight Brewington (Liberty, third round), Lee Humphrey (Florida, fourth round) and Rob Summers (West Virginia, fifth round). Oral Roberts’ Caleb Green was the first overall pick in the draft, selected by the Oklahoma Cavalry.
