MEN’S BASKETBALL ADDS POINT GUARD VINNIE McGHEE TO ’07-08 RECRUITING CLASS

6/11/2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men’s basketball team announced its second signee of the 2007-08 recruiting class with the inking of 6-0, 165-pound point guard Vinnie McGhee, Jr., it was announced today by Hornets’ head coach Jerome Jenkins. McGhee will enroll as a freshman at Sacramento State this fall.

A native of Oakland, Calif., McGhee started at both point and shooting guard each of the last three years for the varsity team at McClymonds High School in Oakland. A two-time all-Oakland Athletic League selection (first team as a senior), McGhee was the team’s leading scorer last year, finishing with averages of  15.8 points, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals per game. In addition, he was named team MVP and led the Warriors to a 28-4 overall record, an Oakland Athletic League and Northern California Div. I championship, and the school’s first-ever state championship game appearance.

As a junior, McGhee averaged 13.5 points per game while leading McClymonds to an 18-14 record. Equally impressive off the court, he had the highest or shared the highest grade point average on the team all three years with the varsity squad, and received the team’s academic achievement award twice.

McGhee has also played for the Oakland Soldiers since the sixth grade, the same AAU team that produced current NBA star LeBron James, former Sacramento State point guard DaShawn Freeman, and current Hornet shooting guard Loren Leath.

“The biggest tangible I love about Vinnie is that he is a winner. He is not a flashy player, but is very solid and does what it takes to win on the basketball floor,” Jenkins said. “He comes from two very good basketball families in McClymonds High School and head coach Dwight Nathaniel, as well as the Oakland Soldiers, and both teams have done a tremendous job of developing players over the years.

“He was the starting point guard for a Soldiers team that included some very good players, and Vinnie had their absolute attention on the basketball floor. Not only is Vinnie a tremendous player, he also takes care of his business in the classroom.”

McGhee was selected to play in Europe this July with an all-star team consisting of Northern California high school players. In addition, he will play in the Sac vs. Bay Showdown which features the finest high school basketball players in Northern California on June 30 at Folsom High School.

McGhee joins College of the Siskiyous forward/center Justin Eller as the two players to sign with Sacramento State thus far. The team finished last season with a 10-19 overall record and a 5-11 mark in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets, who have reached the Big Sky Tournament four times in the last five years, closed the season on a high note by defeating the eventual Big Sky regular season and tournament champion Weber State, 105-83, in the regular season finale.
