HORNETS FALL SHORT AGAINST PORTLAND STATE

1/22/2000

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The California State University, Sacramento men's basketball team nearly pulled off another comeback but junior Rame

Batta’s shot rolled off of the rim as time expired to give Portland State a 72-70 victory. The loss snapped the Hornets’ six-game winning

streak at Memorial.

With the win, Portland State improved to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets dropped to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in

conference action.

Sacramento State struggled through the first half, shooting .318 (7-22) from the floor while the Vikings were nearly unstoppable (.552, 16-29).

Portland State led, 47-29, at the half and stretched the lead to 54-33 with 14:18 to play before the Hornets began to claw their way back into

the game. Sacramento State forced PSU into 13 second-half turnovers and rarely-used freshman Derek Lambeth came off the bench to score 14 points

in 11 minutes to lead the charge.

The Hornets took a one-point lead, 66-65, with 4:12 to play when Batta scored two of his season-high 17 points. The lead, however, was short

lived as the Vikings answered on their next possession and never relinquished control of the game.

Sacramento State will next host Cal State Northridge on Thursday at 7 p.m.
