JEROME JENKINS SIGNS CONTRACT EXTENSION THROUGH 2006

6/4/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State athletics department announced today that Jerome Jenkins has received a one-year contract extension, lengthening his tenure as the Hornets’ head men’s basketball coach through the 2005-06 season.

“I’m excited to extend Coach Jenkins’ contract and I think this shows the confidence we have in his leadership ability,” Sacramento State Athletics Director Dr. Terry Wanless said. “He did a tremendous job in leading the team to a second-place finish in the Big Sky Conference last year and we’re expecting the program to get even better under his guidance in the future.”

Since Jenkins took over the Hornet men’s basketball program prior to the 2000-01 season, the team has improved its overall and conference record each year (5-22, 2-14 in 2000-01; 9-19, 3-11 in 2001-02; 12-17, 5-9 in 2002-03; and finally 13-15, 7-7 in 2003-04). The Hornets posted numerous Div. I era (1991-present) records this past season including highest finish in the Big Sky (tied for second), most wins at home (10), most overall victories (13) and most Big Sky victories (seven).

The Hornets, who hosted a Big Sky Tournament game for the first time ever in 2003-04, won six of their final nine conference games and finished with a 10-4 record at the Hornets Nest.

“I really appreciate the confidence Dr. Wanless and the administration have shown me and my staff,” Jenkins said. “This helps the stability of the program and I believe we’re on the right track toward winning a Big Sky title.”

The Hornets, who recently completed their signing class (a list that includes five players), begin the 2004-05 season on Friday, Nov. 19, at Michigan.
