SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State seniors Joseth Dawson and Joel Jones were each named to the Big Sky All-Conference Men’s Basketball Team, it was announced by the league today. Dawson becomes the second player in school history (Derek Lambeth) to receive all-Big Sky first team honors while Jones earned honorable mention honors for the second time.Dawson was one of 11 players named to the first team while Jones was one of six players to receive honorable mention honors. Eastern Washington senior guard Alvin Snow was the only unanimous first team selection and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player.
Dawson, a senior shooting guard from Fontana, Calif., became the first player in Sacramento State history to earn two Big Sky Player of the Week awards. He led the Hornets in overall scoring (14.4 points per game) and scoring against conference competition (16.4 points per game) despite starting one game all season. He currently ranks first in the Big Sky in free throws made (136) and second in free-throw percentage (.845).
Dawson has posted a team-best 22 games with double-figure points and now has 40 such games over his two-year career with the team. The shooting guard scored a career-high 32 points in the Hornets’ first-ever win against Weber State on Feb. 19, tying him for the fourth-best mark in the program’s Div. I history (1991-pres.). He also scored 30 points in the team’s win at Northern Arizona, converting 14-of-14 free throws in the process. Despite playing just two seasons with the Hornets, the transfer from Mt. San Antonio Junior College already ranks first in Div. I history and fourth in program history in career free throws made (236).
Jones, a senior swingman from San Diego, also earned honorable mention honors as a junior during the 2001-02 season. He currently ranks among the Big Sky’s top 16 players in three-pointers per game (1.78 per game), blocked shots (0.56 per game), three-point field-goal percentage (.372), steals (1.07 per game), offensive rebounds (1.48 per game) and scoring (12.1 points per game). Jones, who tied his career high with 25 points earlier this season at New Mexico, is the only Hornet to start all 27 games this season.
Jones has scored in double figures 17 times this year and is averaging a team-best 29.1 minutes per game. He tallied 18 points and a career-high 11 rebounds at Montana, and narrowly missed a triple-double in the team’s win against Idaho State (12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists). Despite playing just two seasons with the Hornets, Jones currently ranks eighth in Div. I history with 649 career points.
Other Big Sky individual winners included Montana’s Kamarr Davis (Newcomer of the Year), Eastern Washington’s Matt Nelson (Freshman of the Year) and Portland State’s Seamus Boxley (Defensive Player of the Year). Eastern Washington had three players named to the first team (Snow, Marc Axton and Brendon Merritt), Idaho State had two (Marquis Poole and Scott Henry) and the remaining six teams each had one player named to the first team.
Sacramento State (13-14, 7-7) hosts Weber State (14-13, 7-7) this Saturday, March 6, in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament. Tipoff against the Wildcats is 7:05 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinals to face either Northern Arizona or Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash. on Tuesday, March 9
