MORAGA, Calif. -- Frank Allocco had 16 points and Josh Greer added 14 to lead Saint Mary¹s to a 64-55 win over California State University, Sacramento Saturday afternoon at McKeon Pavilion.The win improved the Gaels to 3-3 while the Hornets dropped to 5-2.
After Saint Mary¹s scored a three-pointer on the first possession of the game, Sacramento State exploded. The Hornets made eight of their first 12 attempts to build a 12-3 lead. The team then stretched the advantage to 23-10 before the Gaels responded.
Saint Mary¹s rallied at the end of the half behind deadly three-point shooting to make the score 25-22 in favor of CSUS at the break. The Gaels seized control of the contest early in the second half as Greer made four three-pointers in the first five minutes to create a 10-point lead.
Sacramento State pulled within two on numerous occasions late in the game but could never get closer. The team also had to deal with the loss of Anthony Flood, the Hornets¹ top scorer, who fouled out midway through the second half.
Junior Pablo Gonzales poured in 15 points for his career high and sophomore Rene Jacques had 11 for CSUS.
Brad Millard, Saint Mary¹s 7-3 center, was limited to just 11 points in the game. The Hornets held Millard scoreless for the first 19:12 of the contest. Millard, however, made his presence felt defensively with 10 points and five blocked shots.
Sacramento State will have a week off before travelling to Stanford to play the Cardinal on Saturday. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
