SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State senior shooting guard Joseth Dawson was named Big Sky Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks after leading the Hornets to their first-ever home sweep of Weber State and Idaho State. The Fontana, Calif., native averaged 27.5 points over two games while shooting 48.5 percent (16-33) from the field, 55.0 percent (11-20) from the three-point line and 75.0 percent (12-16) from the free-throw line. Dawson has now led or shared the team lead in scoring each of the last five games and is averaging 24.2 points over that span.
He becomes the first Sacramento State player to earn Big Sky Player of the Week honors twice in the same season since the Hornets joined the league in 1996-97.
In the team’s 64-61 victory over Weber State last Thursday, the senior scored a career-high 32 points on 9-of-18 shooting (including 5-of-9 from beyond the three-point line). Dawson scored the Hornets’ final 12 points of the game while going 6-of-6 from the free-throw line during that stretch. He ended up scoring exactly half of the team’s 64 points, and was the only Sacramento State player to score during the final 6:52 of the contest. The victory was also the first in program history over Weber State.
Against Idaho State on Saturday, Dawson scored a game-high 23 points, including a season-high six three-pointers. The shooting guard went 7-of-15 from the field, 6-of-11 from beyond the three-point line, and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Dawson, who also received player of the week honors on Feb. 9, has now scored in double figures in all but five games this season, and has dropped in at least 22 points in four of his last five games. He leads the Hornets with scoring averages of 14.5 points (overall) and 17.0 points (against Big Sky competition). Among Big Sky leaders (all games), he currently ranks first in free throws made (125), third in free-throw percentage (.850), seventh in three-pointers made per game (1.92) and eighth in scoring.
Sacramento State (12-13, 6-6 Big Sky) concludes the regular season this week on the road at Montana (Wednesday, Feb. 25) and Montana State (Sunday, Feb. 29). The Hornets are currently tied for second place in the conference standings with Northern Arizona. Sacramento State, which has never finished higher than sixth place in the Big Sky standings, has the opportunity to receive a first-round bye in the Big Sky Tournament (March 6-10) should the team finish in second place.
