SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Senior Anthony Flood scored 17 points and came up
with a huge block at the end of the game to help lead Sacramento State
to a 59-56 victory over Nevada Wednesday night at Hornet Gym.
The win improved the Hornets to 5-1 overall. Nevada dropped to 1-5.
With Sacramento State leading, 57-56, Nevada’s Adrian McCullough
attempted to give the Wolf Pack the lead. McCullough moved around Rame
Batta and took a 10-foot jumper which was rejected by Flood who ended
the night with five blocks. The loose ball was recovered by sophomore
Rene Jacques who was immediately fouled. Jacques then made both free
throws to seal the game.
Neither team shot exceptionally well in the first half. The Hornets
were a dismal 6-for-24 from the floor while the Wolf Pack were not much better at 7-for-24. Sacramento State, however, overcame its early
shooting woes with a 13-for-26 effort in the second half sparked by the play fo Jacques.
The guard was 5-for-8 from the floor and 6-fo-7 from the free throw
line to end with a season-high 17 points. Junior Ricky Glenn continued
to play well off the bench with nine points and seven rebounds. Glenn
also electrified the crowd with a flying one-handed dunk to give the
team 49-40 lead with six muntues to play.
Nevada was able to claw its way back into the game, however, with
numerous second chances. The Wolf Pack outrebounded the Hornets, 45-37, and launched 37 second-half shots cvompered with 26 by CSUS.
Sacramento State will begin a tough stretch on the road on Saturday
against Saint Mary’s. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in
Moraga, Calif. The team will then play at Stanford and Houston before
retunring to Sacramento to host Colorado State on Dec. 27 at Arco Arena.
