MEN’S BASKETBALL SIGNS MARK SCHMIDT

5/13/2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men’s basketball team continued to add to its 2003 recruiting class with the signing of Mark Schmidt to a National Letter of Intent, it was announced today. Schmidt will enroll at the University in the fall and will be a sophomore for the Hornets during the upcoming season.

“We are excited to have Mark commit to the program,” Sacramento State head coach Jerome Jenkins said. “He is athletic, good around the basket and provides us with the shot blocker we need in the middle.”

A 6-9 forward, Schmidt prepped at Rocklin High School before playing last season at Yuba College. With the 49ers, he appeared in the first 14 games of the season before tearing his ACL during practice. Until the injury, Schmidt led the state with 3.4 blocked shots per game. He also poured in 9.8 points and grabbed 7.2 rebounds per game while starting all 14 contests. His top single-game performance came against Monterey Peninsula where he scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds. In that game, Schmidt was 5-for-5 from the floor and 7-of-7 at the free-throw line.

At Rocklin, he was a two-year starter for a team which won back-to-back Sierra Foothill League titles. The Thunder also captured the 2000-01 Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II championship and advanced to the state semifinals.

Schmidt is the first player to sign with Sacramento State this Spring and joins Aaron Perry and Jason Gilzene who committed during the Fall.
