LAMBETH, WHITE NAMED ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE

3/5/2003

OGDEN, Utah — Sacramento State seniors Derek Lambeth and Jimmy White each earned all-Big Sky Conference honors, it was announced today. Lambeth was named to the league’s first team while White garnered honorable mention honors.

Lambeth becomes the first Sacramento State men’s basketball player to be named to the first team since the school joined the conference in 1996-97. The senior, who is also the reigning co-Big Sky Conference Player of the Week, ended the regular season averaging 12.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. The Oakland, Calif., native currently leads the Hornets in scoring and is third in rebounding, assists and steals. His scoring average ranks as the 11th-best mark in the Big Sky for all games and his 13.6 ppg in Big Sky play is the eight-best mark in the league.

A four-year member of the team, Lambeth broke out this season, scoring 70 more points in 2002-03 than he did in his first three seasons combined. This past week, he averaged 23.0 points per game and helped lead Sacramento State to its first appearance in the Big Sky Tournament. On Saturday, March 1, he scored a season-high 25 points — 23 of which came in the second half — to help the Hornets defeat Montana State, 72-52, in a must-win game.

White ended the regular season as the league leader in a pair of statistical categories. The Las Vegas native led the Big Sky with 35 blocked shots and a .574 shooting percentage in league games. Like Lambeth, White has started all 27 games this season and is averaging 9.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. In the team’s 14 Big Sky contests, White produced 10.9 points and 7.3 rebounds. He is the team leader in rebounds, blocked shots and field goal percentage while also ranking third in scoring and fourth in steals.

White is the only Sacramento State player to record multiple double-doubles this season. The forward tallied three games with at least 10 points and 10 rebounds. His most recent double-double came in the final regular season game where he had 16 points and 11 rebounds against Montana State.

Weber State’s Jermaine Boyette was named Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Player. The senior led the league with 20.1 points per game and became just the 16th player to be a three-time all-league selection. Montana’s Kevin Criswell was named Freshman of the Year after averaging 16.4 points per game. Slobodan Ocokoljic of Weber State was the league’s Newcomer of the Year and Northern Arizona senior Ryan McDade earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.
