SACRAMENTO, Calif.--- Freshman Kelly Golob scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help lead Northern Arizona past Sacramento State, 63-45, Saturday night in front of 1,124 fans at the Hornets Nest.
The win improved the Lumberjacks to 12-9 overall and 3-5 in Big Sky Conference games. It also gave NAU its third win in the past four league contests. The Hornets fell to 8-13 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
The game was marred by sloppy play from both teams. The two squads combined for 48 fouls and 43 turnovers while shooting 35-of-107 (.327).
Sacramento State scored on its first possession and later added a layup at the 16:26 mark to claim a 4-0 lead. NAU did not make its first points until Kendall Minor buried a three-pointer 6:16 into the game. That bucket started a 13-0 run for the Lumberjacks and put them ahead for the remainder of the game.
The Hornets finally ended their scoring drought, which lasted 6:45, on a layup from Brandon Guyton.
Northern Arizona managed a double-figure lead for the remainder of the first period and led, 29-19, at halftime. In the first half, the Hornets were 8-of-26 (.308) and just 2-for-5 from the line. The Lumberjacks were slightly better, making 9-of-26 (.346) overall, including four three-pointers.
The Hornets rallied at the start of the second half, closing to within two on two occasions. The final instance came with 15:14 left on a three by Guyton. NAU, however, immediately answered with a trey by Golob which sparked a 7-0 run.
Sacramento State finished the game with a season-low .259 (14-54) field-goal percentage. The team was also 3-of-15 from behind the arc and committed 23 turnovers. Derek Lambeth led the Hornets with 12 points while Guyton added 11.
Golob was joined in double-digits by Ryan McDade (15) and Stephen Garnett (13). Aaron Bond came off the bench to score nine points, grab 12 rebounds and block four shots.
The Hornets remain at home next week hosting Eastern Washington and Portland State. The game against EWU will take place on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7:05 p.m.
