MEN’S BASKETBALL SIGNS EMIR MEDUNJANIN

6/14/2002

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- The Sacramento State men’s basketball program completed its recruiting class by signing Emir Medunjanin to a scholarship, the team announced today. Medunjanin will enroll at the University in the fall and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-6 shooting guard/small forward comes to the Hornets after playing the past two seasons at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Mich. In his two years with the team, the Ocelots posted a 66-5 overall record. Last year, the team was ranked No. 1 in the nation by the National Junior College Athletic Association for the entire regular season. Schoolcraft opened the season 34-0 before losing in the national junior college semifinals. The team was also the Michigan Community College Athletic Association and the Region XII champions both years he competed.

As a sophomore, Medunjanin averaged 11 points per game. During the team’s 25 regular season games, he shot .569 from the field including .482 from three-point range. His overall field goal percentage ranked 10th in the state of Michigan while his three-point percentage was the third highest.

“I think Emir is a great outside shooter,” Sacramento State head coach Jerome Jenkins said. “He’s a zone buster. The scouting report on him is that if you leave him open, he will knock it down.

“He is also a very smart player and always seems to make the right decision with the basketball.”

Prior to attending Schoolcraft, Medunjanin graduated from North Farmington High School in 2000. While there, he was named third team all-state by the Detroit Free Press, first team all-Oakland County and first team all-area. He played three years of varsity basketball and helped lead the team to a pair of conference titles.

Medunjanin, who was born in Bosnia, was a three-time all-Western Lakes Athletic Association selection. As a junior, he averaged just over 22 points per game and followed that effort by scoring 19 points per game as a senior.

Medunjanin joins Deshawn Freeman, Djibril Diop and Jameel Pugh as members of the 2001-02 Sacramento State recruiting class. Freeman, Diop and Medunjanin will play with the team in the upcoming 2002-03 season. Pugh will be forced to sit out one season due to NCAA regulations regarding transfers.
