JEROME JENKINS SIGNED TO TWO-YEAR CONTRACT

4/2/2002

SACRAMENTO, Calif.-- The Sacramento State athletic department has signed head men’s basketball coach Jerome Jenkins to a two-year contract, it was announced today. Jenkins, who has served as the team’s head coach for the last two seasons on an interim basis, will be with the Hornets through the 2003-04 season with the school holding an option for the 2004-05 campaign.

“I am very excited,” Jenkins said. “This gives me and my staff the opportunity to continue what we’ve started. I feel that we’re moving in the right direction and we will continue to work to our goal of winning the Big Sky Conference title.”

Sacramento State posted a 9-19 overall record and a 3-11 Big Sky mark last season. Both the overall and conference victory totals tied the best mark at Sacramento State since the program moved to Division I in 1991-92.

“I believe that the foundation has been laid for a successful future,” Sacramento State Athletic Director Debby Colberg said. “I have been pleased with the progress that has been made in Jerome’s two years as a coach.”

Prior to taking over as head coach before the 2000-01 season, Jenkins served as an assistant coach with the Hornets for one season. He has also been an assistant coach at Eastern Washington (1997-99), Diablo Valley College (1993-97) and Regis (1990-91).

“I appreciate Debby Colberg for having faith in the job we are doing,” Jenkins said. “This is a huge opportunity for me. I plan to stay on the path and continue building the program.”

Jenkins, who earned his bachelor’s degree from Regis in 1990, has led Sacramento State to its most successful back-to-back seasons since the program moved to Division I in 1991-92.
