READY FOR HOOPS? MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYS HOME EXHIBITION GAME TUESDAY NIGHT
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- With its top five scorers all returning from a year ago, the Sacramento State men’s basketball team opens the 2012-13 season on Tuesday, Oct. 30, when the squad plays its lone exhibition game against Simpson at 7:05 p.m. inside the Nest.
Like all home games this year, admission for the exhibition game is $12 for reserved seating (Sections 3, 4, and 7), $10 for adult general admission (Sections 1 and 5), and $5 for youth general admission (ages 3-17, Sections 1 & 5). For a seating chart, click here.
Tuesday will serve as a warmup for the Hornets’ first regular season game of the season on Friday, Nov. 9, when the team hosts UC Merced at 7:05 p.m. In fact, the team plays its first two, and three of the first four games of the regular season at home, including Nov. 20 against rival UC Davis.
This year’s Hornet squad is made up of eight returners and seven newcomers. Over 75 percent of the team’s offensive production returns from a year ago, the bulk of which came from forward John Dickson (12.4 ppg), swingman Joe Eberhard (11.1 ppg), shooting guard Jackson Carbajal (11.1 ppg), center Konner Veteto (9.0 ppg) and point guard Dylan Garrity (8.1 ppg). Those five combined to average 51.7 points per game.
Not only have the Hornets increased their league win total three straight seasons, last year’s squad went 5-3 in the second half of Big Sky play, secured double figures in overall wins for the first time in five years and posted the team’s best field goal percentage (.451) during the Div. I era (1991-pres.).
Joining the eight returning players are seven newcomers, made up of four junior college transfers, two freshmen and one Div. I transfer.
Of the eight returners, fifth-year head coach Brian Katz will work with a mix of five guards (Carbajal, Garrity, Julian Demalleville, Jordan Estrada and Kendell Groom), two forwards (Dickson and Eberhard) and one center (Veteto). The team’s lone fourth-year senior, Dickson, was anointed team captain along with Eberhard, Garrity and Demalleville.
For those who can’t make it on Tuesday, fans can listen to the game via www.hornetsports.com by clicking here. Brian Berger will call all the action. Steve McElroy, who enters his 16th year as the team’s play-by-play radio announcer, will begin calling games on Nov. 9 when the regular season opens. Free video streams of all home games, via Big Sky TV, will not be made available until the regular season begins.
NOTES -- Simpson is an NAIA school from Redding, Calif., that competes in the California Pacific Conference…the Hornets have played the Red Hawks four times in the past, including regular season games in 1985-86 and 2007-08, and exhibition contests last season and 2005-06…last year’s exhibition game saw the Hornets defeat Simpson, 79-65, behind Eberhard’s 20 points.
