MEN’S BASKETBALL RELEASES 2012-13 SCHEDULE
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State fifth-year men’s basketball head coach Brian Katz announced the team’s 2012-13 schedule today.
The schedule includes 29 regular-season games, comprised of 14 at home and 15 on the road. With the expansion of the Big Sky Conference to include new members North Dakota and Southern Utah, Sacramento State will now play 20 league games this year after playing 16 each of the previous six seasons.
Sacramento State returns eight players, including the top five scorers, from last year’s squad which finished 10-18 overall and 5-11 in the Big Sky. That included a 5-3 record against conference opponents during the second half of league play.
This year’s schedule includes road dates at Utah and Arizona State, and the 110th meeting against UC Davis, which takes place inside the The Nest on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Sacramento State will be playing at Utah (Dec. 3, 1992) and Arizona State (Dec. 16, 1995) for the second time in school history.
Of the team’s nine non-conference games, four will be at home, including the season opener against UC Merced on Friday, Nov. 9. In fact, the team opens the season with four of its first six games inside The Nest, featuring dates against CSU Bakersfield (Nov. 14), UC Davis (Nov. 20) and Dominican (Nov. 27) sandwiched around road games at Utah (Nov. 16) and Central Arkansas (Nov. 24).
The Hornets will play at Arizona State (Dec. 1) and San Jose State (Dec. 8) before opening Big Sky Conference play on Dec. 19 at home against Montana State. Pivotal stretches during league play will take place Jan. 10-19 when the Hornets play four straight road games, and Jan. 24-Feb. 9 when the team plays five of six games at home. That includes a season-long three-game homestand over a six-day stretch when Sacramento State hosts Northern Arizona (Feb. 4), Eastern Washington (Feb. 7) and Portland State (Feb. 9).
For the third straight season, the Hornets will participate in the ESPN BracketBusters event which will see the team travel to an opponent yet to be determined on Feb. 23. ESPN will announce the BracketBuster field towards the end of January.
Sacramento State’s final regular season game will come against Montana State on March 9, and a hopeful trip to the Big Sky Tournament will follow. With the addition of two teams to the Big Sky, the league’s postseason tournament has expanded to seven teams, up one spot from last year’s six-team tournament field.
The Big Sky Tournament will take place over three days (Thurs.-Sat., March 14-16) on the home floor of the regular season champion. The No. 1 seed will also receive a bye into the semifinals while Thursday quarterfinal games will consist of No. 2 taking on the No. 7 seed, No. 3 facing No. 6, and No. 4 taking on the No. 5 seed. The semifinal games will take place on March 15, with the championship played on March 16. The winner of the championship game will receive the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
