SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State head men’s basketball coach Brian Katz announced today that Southwestern Illinois College forward Joey Quigley has signed with the team, and will enroll at the university as a junior this fall.
A 6-foot-8, 210-pound player from Kansas City, Mo., Quigley becomes the sixth signee of Sacramento State’s 2012 recruiting class. He played the past two seasons at Southwestern Illinois College (2010-12) after prepping at Kansas City’s Staley High School.
During his two seasons at Southwestern Illinois, he helped the Blue Storm to a pair of semifinal appearances at the NJCAA Region XXIV Tournament as well as a combined 40-18 overall record and 20-12 mark in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference. Quigley was asked to play all five positions during his two-year tenure at SWIC, which included starting at point guard five times. He started every game as a sophomore (primarily at power forward) and was a part-time starter as a freshman.
Quigley, who is one of three players from Southwestern Illinois College to sign with Div. I programs this year, was a first team all-region and all-conference selection as a sophomore (2011-12) after averaging 7.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 0.6 blocked shots per game. He shot 45.2 percent from the field (76-168), and was the team’s fourth leading scorer.
As a freshman (2010-11), Quigley helped SWIC to a 20-9 overall record and a 10-6 mark in conference. In fact, the Blue Storm finish with identical overall and league records during both of his seasons.
“Like some of the other recruits we’ve brought in this year, Joey is a very versatile player,” Katz said. “He can primarily play three positions (shooting guard and both forward spots), and even got some playing time at point guard in junior college. He is a tough kid who can handle and pass the ball well, and really knows how to play the game of basketball.”
At Staley High School, he received the rare distinction of being an all-state selection in both basketball and football (tight end) during his senior season. During that year in basketball, he averaged 16.2 points, 13.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.1 blocked shots while being named second team all-state and first team all-league. In football, he caught 37 passes for 735 yards (19.9 yards per catch) while scoring nine touchdowns as a senior, easily the most receiving touchdowns on the team.
Quigley joins Edison High School swingman Dreon Barlett, Santa Rosa JC forward Jordan Salley, New Mexico JC center/forward Ryan Okwudibonye, Pleasant Grove HS guard Cody Demps and Ohlone JC guard Mikh McKinney as the six players that have signed with Sacramento State thus far.
