MEN’S BASKETBALL SIGNS EDISON HIGH SCHOOL PRODUCT DREON BARLETT
4/27/2012
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State head men’s basketball coach Brian Katz announced the signing of Edison High School swingman Dreon Barlett to a national letter of intent. Barlett will enroll at the university as a freshman in the fall.
Barlett, who is the Hornets’ fifth signee of the 2012 recruiting class, was a high school teammate of current Sacramento State point guard Dylan Garrity. Barlett and Garrity both started for the 2010-11 Edison HS squad that went 26-3 overall, won a Sunset League championship and made a CIF Southern Section quarterfinal appearance.
A 6-foot-3, 170-pound swingman from Pasadena, Calif., Barlett was a two-time first team all-Sunset League selection during his two seasons at Edison, and was selected to the all-CIF Southern Section 1A squad last year as a senior.
During his senior season, he helped the Chargers to a CIF Southern Section second-round appearance while scoring a league-leading 22.8 points per game to go with 6.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals. He shot 44.0 percent (182-414) from the field and 36.2 percent (81-224) from the three-point line while scoring in double figures in every game during the season.
As a junior (2010-11), Barlett averaged 14.2 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while shooting 51.3 percent (140-273) from the field and 42.6 percent (43-101) from the three-point line. That included scoring 16 points in both the second round and quarterfinal games of the section tournament. During his two seasons at Edison, the Chargers combined for a 46-12 overall record and a 14-6 mark in the Sunset League.
Prior to Edison, he played one season of varsity ball as a sophomore (2009-10) at Bolsa Grande High School in Garden Grove, Calif.
“All three of this year’s perimeter recruits are a nice compliment to one another in that each fulfills a specific role,” Katz said. “In Dreon’s case, he’s an explosive athlete and scorer who made a nice transition from playing the power forward spot as a junior to playing as a swingman during his senior season. Not only can Dreon score, he has the potential to be a lock-down defender. He is long, athletic and will eventually be very strong physically.”
Barlett joins Santa Rosa JC forward Jordan Salley, New Mexico JC center/forward Ryan Okwudibonye, Pleasant Grove HS guard Cody Demps and Ohlone JC guard Mikh McKinney as the five players that have signed with Sacramento State thus far.
