MEN’S BASKETBALL SIGNS OHLONE COLLEGE GUARD MIKH McKINNEY
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State head men’s basketball coach Brian Katz announced the program’s second signee of the 2012-13 recruiting class with the inking of guard Mikh McKinney of Ohlone College. McKinney will enroll as a sophomore at the University this fall and have three years of eligibility remaining.
A 6-foot-1, 165-pound guard from Union City, Calif., McKinney spent two years at Fremont’s Ohlone College, redshirting in 2010-11, and playing his freshman season in 2011-12. As a freshman, he was a first team all-state and first team all-Coast Conference selection after averaging 14.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 53.0 percent (123-232) from the field, 40.9 percent (18-44) from the three-point line and 80.0 percent (100-125) from free throw line.
He averaged nearly five free throw attempts per game, and led Ohlone in points, field goals, free throws made and attempted, assists and steals. Ohlone finished the year with a 15-12 record and an 8-4 mark in the Coast League (North Division).
McKinney prepped his senior season at Washington High School in Fremont, Calif., where he was a first team all-Mission Valley Athletic League selection. He helped lead the Huskies to a 19-10 record after finishing with season averages of 21.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.8 steals per game while shooting 56.0 percent (121-216) from the field, 40.8 percent (20-49) from the three-point line and 79.3 percent (73-92) from the free throw line. McKinney spent his sophomore season playing varsity ball for Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward.
“We are very excited to have Mikh for three years,” Katz said. “He has the ability to play both the point and shooting guard positions, and is very skilled. He has excelled when playing both roles as a scorer and a passer, he shoots for a high percentage and takes good care of the basketball.”
McKinney joins Pleasant Grove High School guard Cody Demps as the two players that have signed with Sacramento State thus far.
McKinney and Demps join a Sacramento State squad that returns its top five scorers from a 2011-12 season that saw the program increase its conference win total for the third straight season, post double figures in overall wins for the first time since 2006-07, and record a 5-3 conference record during the second half of league play.
