STOCKTON, Calif. —Jake Pineo and Cameron Rappleye each shot an even-par 71 and three other Sacramento State golfers carded rounds of 73 during the first round of the Pacific Invitational, Monday at Brookside Country Club.
The Hornets finished the day 4-over as a team but are in 11th place overall. The team is 15 strokes behind Oregon and UC Davis which are tied for the team lead at 11-under (273). Pacific (278), BYU (279) and Saint Mary's (280) complete the top five.
Individually, 21 players in the field posted red numbers led by UC Davis' Tyler Raber and Oregon's Eugene Wong who each shot 64.
Pineo enjoyed his finest round as a Hornet. The freshman opened with a bogey on the par-4 first but then had five straight pars. He moved to even with a birdie of the par-5 seventh and dropped to 1-under with a birdie of the par-3 eighth. Three bogeys on the back nine moved Pineo to 2-over before he ended his round with birdies on the final two holes.
Cameron Rappleye played the front nine at 1-over with a mix of two birdies, four pars and three bogeys. He made up that stroke on the back with birdies of both par threes (12th and 17th) and another of the par-5 16th.
Johnson opened his day with by parring the first five holes and stood 1-under through seven holes with a birdie on the par-4 sixth. A bogey left him even at the turn and he remained there through 14. From that point, a bogey on the par-4 15th and a double on the par-5 16th moved him to three over. He was able to bounce back with a birdie on 17 and a par on 18.
Grant Rappleye had three birdies on the front but also mixed in a quad on the par-4 fourth to stand at 1-over through nine. His final nine holes consisted of one birdie, six pars and two bogeys to leave him at 2-over.
Kyle Candlish was also one over through the first nine holes with a combination of two birdies, four pars and three bogeys. Candlish birdied the par-5 10th to fall to even but bogeyed the 11th and 13th before a run of five straight pars closed his day.
