WOMEN'S GOLF IN SECOND PLACE AFTER BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST ROUND

4/22/2012

CHANDLER, Ariz. — Freshman Lexie Hall shot an even-par round of 72 and the Sacramento State women's golf team is in second place following the first round of the Big Sky Women's Golf Championships on Sunday at Ocotillo Golf Resort.

As a team, the Hornets shot 296 and are sitting six strokes behind Northern Colorado in the standings. Northern Arizona is in third following a first round 298 while Montana (303) and Weber State (306) complete the top five.

Hall was even on both sides of the course. The freshman began her round by birdying the par-5 first but immediately gave the stroke back with a bogey on the par-4 second. Her front nine also included a bogey on No. 6 and a birdie on No. 8. On the back, she had a birdie on the par-4 13th and a bogey on the par-4 14th along with seven pars. Her effort placed her in a tie for fifth place two strokes behind Weber State's Kelsey Chugg.

Senior Julie Shutler is tied for ninth place after carding a round of 74. Shutler played the front nine even with a birdie, a bogey and seven pars. On the back nine, she birdied Nos. 13 and 14 but also had four bogeys and three pars.

Kercia Brakel matched Shutler with a 74. Brakel opened slowly playing the first three holes at 2-over. She rebounded with birdies on the par-3 fourth and the par-5 sixth. Following three pars, she made the turn even and played the back nine with seven pars and two bogeys.

Freshman Sagee Palavivatana and Samantha Stockton each shot 76. Palavivatana's front nine was derailed by a quadruple bogey on the par-4 eighth. Outside of that hole, she had seven pars and a bogey. Palavivatana began the back nine with birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 followed by four straight pars. The Center HS product closed her round with a bogey on No. 16 and two pars.

Stockton opened with a birdie on No. 1 and added three pars to stand at 1-under through four holes. Back-to-back bogeys moved her into the black before she drew even with a birdie on the par-3 seventh. A double-bogey on No. 8 left her at 2-over at the turn. On the back nine, Stockton birdied the par-5 11th and added five pars and three bogeys.

The second round will get under way on Monday morning at 6:30 a.m.
