The Men's Basketball Coaches' Circle was established in 2012 as a way to honor area coaches that graduated from Sacramento State. The first 10 coaches, who all graduated between 1950 and 1965, were inducted at a banquet on Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Sacramento State Alumni Center. More area coaches with Sacramento State ties will be inducted into the Coaches' Circle in future years.
The 2012 inductees were comprised of Dick Galvin (‘52), Carl Youngstrom (‘52), George Goto (‘54), Ron McKenna (‘58), John Karsten (‘61), Gordon Pistochini (‘62), John Rankin (‘62), Jim Greene (‘63), Bob McCoy (‘63) and Al Manfredi (‘64). The group has combined to coach basketball locally for over 250 years at the middle school, high school and collegiate levels.
Of the 10 alums, six played collegiately at Sacramento State, comprised of Galvin (1950-52), Goto (1952-54), Greene (1960-63), Karsten (1959-61), McCoy (1961-62) and Youngstrom (1949-52). Both McCoy and Greene were members of the 1961-62 national runner-up squad that was inducted into the Sacramento State Men’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. McKenna coached at Sacramento State as an assistant from 1988-92, and Karsten was the Hornets’ freshman coach in 1961-62.
