TRACK & FIELD WINS SIX EVENT TITLES AT AGGIE OPEN
3/14/2009
DAVIS, Calif. — Junior Nick Mills surpassed the NCAA regional standard en route to winning the javelin at the Aggie Open on Saturday at UC Davis. Mills, who was competing in his first collegiate meet, was one of six event winners in the meet — which was the first of the outdoor season for the Hornets.
A transfer from Delta JC in Stockton Calif., Mills threw 203-02 to win the event by 15-feet, 5-inches. His throw also qualified him for the NCAA regional after bettering the standard of 202-01.
Sacramento State also received event victories from Mornisola Keshinro, Ericka Violett (twice), Lora Marchini, and the relays. Keshinro ran the 400 in a personal best 57.32 seconds and also placed third in the 400-hurdles (1:05.50).
Violett had the top mark in both the 100-hurdles and the women’s pole vault. The junior ran the hurdles in 14.46 seconds and was one of three Hornets to place in the top five — along with Nicole Jackson (4th, 14.95) and Sakya Bolton (5th, 15.27). In the pole vault, Violett and teammate Lizzy Norvell each cleared 11-11.75 to share the top honor. Violett was awarded first place in the event while Norvell was given third based on jumps.
Marchini led three top-five finishes by Sacramento State runners in the women’s 1500. Marchini crossed the line if 4:41.83 to win the event and shave nearly four seconds off of her PR from a year ago. Jodi Leal was fourth in 4:48.95 and Jennie Eiremo was fifth in 4:50.94.
The women’s 4x100 relay team capped the list of event winners by running 47.20 which was .22 seconds faster than the next team.
In field events, the Sacramento State women had seven top-five finishes. Among those were Nicole McClure who placed third in the hammer with a throw of 162-06 which moved her into fourth place in school history.
The Hornet men had a total of seven top-five showings in the meet.
Sacramento State returns to action on Saturday with the Hornet Invite.
