SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior running back Garrett White rushed for a career-high 183 yards to lead the Sacramento State football team to a 27-17 win over Cal Poly Saturday evening at Fred Anderson Field. The game marked the first win for the Hornets in the 2002 season. Sacramento State is now 1-2 on the season while Cal Poly fell to 0-4.White, who tallied 109 yards in the first half alone, became the first Hornet to rush over 100-yards since Kendall Riley posted 113 against Eastern Washington on Oct. 20, 2001. The Corning, Calif., native also tallied the most yards by a Sacramento State running back since Charles Roberts posted 183 yards against Portland State on Nov. 1, 1997.
Sophomore quarterback Ryan Leadingham led the Hornet air attack by completing 14-of-21 passes for 263 yards and a touchdown strike to sophomore receiver Fred Amey. Amey led the receiving corps with five catches for 139 yards. For Amey, it marked the first 100-yard game this season and the third of his career. He has also caught a pass in 14 straight-games (each game of his career).
Sacramento State got on the board first at the 10-minute mark of the first quarter when Leadingham connected with Amey on a 52-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the Hornets’ drive. Sophomore Bret LeVier connected on a 27-yard field goal with three minutes remaining in the quarter to give Sacramento State a 10-0 advantage.
Cal Poly answered back in the seventh-minute of the second quarter when quarterback Chris Peterson plunged for a 1-yard touchdown run. The Mustangs extra point attempt failed.
The Hornet defense increased the lead three minutes later when junior defensive lineman Ben Fox tipped a pass by Peterson at the line. Sophomore linebacker Kelly Micco caught the pass in mid air and ran the ball back 6-yards for the touchdown. It marked the first time a Hornet defender returned a pick for a score since Ed Canonico went 16 yards at Weber State on Oct. 2, 1999.
Freshman running back Tyronne Gross gave the Hornets a 24-6 lead with one minute remaining in the first half with a 2-yard touchdown run. It was the first rushing touchdown of his collegiate career. Gross’ only other touchdown came on a 43-yard pass at UTEP on Aug. 31.
Cal Poly forced a fumble and kicker Navid Niakan connected on a 32-yard field goal with one second remaining to make the contest 24-9 at the half.
In the second half, Levier connected on a 36-yard field goal to seal the victory for the Hornets. Peterson ran for a one yard touchdown with nine minutes remaining to conclude the scoring in the contest.
The Sacramento State offense finished with season highs in rushing (262), passing (263) and total yards (525).
Ryan Kroeker and Ramon Payne led the Hornets with seven tackles apiece. The team tallied four tackles for loss, including two sacks. Sacramento State also had a pair of interceptions and recovered a fumble.
The Cal Poly defense was paced by Dave Richardson, Jackson Beauchamp and Jordan Beck who each had 11 tackles. Offensively, the Mustangs were guided quarterback Chris Peterson who had 50 rushing and 81 passing yards.
The attendance of 14, 651 was the sixth-largest total for a Sacramento State home game. The figure was also the third-highest mark for a season opener.
