SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Sacramento State put a severe scare into Cal Poly on Saturday night, but the third-ranked Mustangs held on for a 17-10 win in front of 8,143 fans at Hornet Stadium. With the win, Cal Poly moved to 3-0 on the season while the Hornets dropped to 0-2.The Mustangs struck first when Ramses Barden caught a 59-yard touchdown pass from Matt Brennan on Cal Poly’s first offensive play of the game. On the play, Barden ran an up-and-out route to gain separation from the Sacramento State coverage.
The score remained 7-0 until Juan Gamboa converted a 34-yard field goal with 7:05 left in the second quarter. The field goal capped a drive in which the Hornets appeared to tie the game on a touchdown run from Gerwin Williams.
