FOOTBALL TOPPLED BY BOISE STATE IN SEASON OPENER

BOISE, Idaho --- Senior Jared Zabransky threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead Boise State to a 45-0 victory over Sacramento State, in front of 29,674 fans at Bronco Stadium.

The game was the first for both seasons.

The Broncos wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, when Ian Johnson dashed around the right side of the line for a 19-yard touchdown with10:34 left in the first quarter. Zabransky built on the lead with a 1-yard plunge on the team’s next drive. BSU added a third score following a Hornet interception when Johnson scored from four yards out.

The second quarter began with another Bronco score. Legedu Nannee fought off safety Brent Webber to catch the touchdown pass in the back of the end zone with 12:35 left in the first half. From that point, neither team scored before halftime.

Zabransky went deep at the start of the third quarter, finding Drisan James for a 52-yard touchdown to make the score, 35-0, with 13:20 showing in the period. Anthony Montgomery tacked on a 33-yard field goal to make the score 38-0 at the end of the third quarter. The final points of the game came on a 1-yard run from Jon Helmandollar with 1:18 left in the game.

Overall, Boise State rushed for 215 yards and added 212 through the air. Johnson led the ground attack with 89 yards on 13 carries. James led all receivers with three catches for 125 yards.

Sacramento State was limited to 50 rushing yards and 32 passing yards. Kris Daniels tallied 24 yards on 13 carries while Gerwin Williams contributed 18 yards on six attempts. Starter Tim Brockwell and Crosby Wehr combined to go 6-of-15 through the air. Sophomore Bobby Mooshagian caught half of the those passes for 16 yards.

Brett Shelton and Brent Webber led the Sacramento State defense with 12 tackles apiece.

The Hornets will next have a bye week before taking on Cal Poly on Sept. 16. The game against the Mustangs will be the first home contest of the season.
