SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Junior Tyronne Gross rushed for a season-high 114 yards and two touchdowns and the Sacramento State defense tied a school record with four interceptions as the Hornets defeated Weber State, 31-12, Saturday night at Hornet Stadium.
The victory improved Sacramento State to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in Big Sky Conference games. The Wildcats dropped to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in league contests.
The Hornets found themselves in a quick hole as Weber State scored two field goals in the first 10 minutes. The first came from 28 yards on the opening drive of the game. Joe Johnson added a 30-yarder with 5:24 remaining in the first quarter. That drive was aided by a Sacramento State fumble on their first offensive play of the game.
The Hornets took the lead with 3:40 left in the opening quarter on a 19-yard run from Gross. The Stockton, Calif., native broke free at the line and eventually got around the left side for the score.
Sacramento State picked off its first pass of the season on the following drive when senior Ramon Payne intercepted Kyle Bauer at the Hornet 37-yard line. The team, however, was unable to capitalize, resulting in a punt down to the Weber State 19. After two rushes, junior Matt Logue intercepted Bauer and returned it 14 yards for his first career touchdown.
Payne added his second interception of the game on the next series leading to another Hornet touchdown. The team moved the ball behind freshman running back Ryan Mole down to the 15-yard line. Mole then came in motion from the slot, took a handoff from Ryan Leadingham and connected with sophomore Ryan Coogler for a 15-yard touchdown pass to give the team a 21-6 advantage.
Sacramento State capped its first-half scoring with a 33-yard field goal from sophomore Mitch Lively before Weber State answered with a 36-yarder from Joe Johnson to make the score 24-9 at halftime. The Hornet field goal was set up by an interception from linebacker Jimmy Ellingson. The interception was the fourth for the team in a 17-minute span in the first half.
After a scoreless third quarter, Sacramento State drove to the Wildcat 25-yard line but Mole’s second pass attempt of the game was intercepted by James McCowan who returned the ball to the Sacramento State 19. A late hit on the play took the ball to the 10-yard line, however Weber State lost three yards on the drive and settled for a 30-yard field goal from Johnson.
The Hornets sealed the game with 2:59 remaining when Gross scampered down the left sideline for a 14-yard score.
Individually, Gross led all players with 114 rushing yards on 21 carries. The performance was the sixth 100-yard effort of his career. Mole added 52 rushing yards and the Hornets easily recorded their season-best with 222 rushing yards. Through the air, Leadingham was 14-of-24 for 154 yards. Senior Fred Amey recorded a game-high five receptions for 82 yards and Coogler tallied four catches for 60 yards.
Defensively, Sacramento State had five sacks, including three from junior Jacob Houston. The mark ties the school record held by Houston (earlier this season against Southern Utah), Jason Sandel and Anthony Daisley. Ellingson led the team with 11 tackles while Logue and Brett Shelton each had six.
Weber State received 97 rushing yards from senior Nick Chournos who was playing the game with broken ribs. Bauer ended the night 12-of-37 for 155 yards and four interceptions. Brady Fosmark was the standout on defense. Fosmark led all players with 14 tackles, including 11 solo. That total includes seven tackles-for-loss, three of which were sacks.
NOTES: Johnson’s four field goals tied for the second-most in Weber State history…senior Mohammad Warrad carried the ball for the first time in his four-year career and gained two yards on the final play of the game…the four interceptions ties the school’s Div. I-AA era record. The feat had been performed five other times, most recently against Saint Mary’s last season.
