FOOTBALL SHOWS UPS AND DOWNS IN OPENING SCRIMAGE OF THE SPRING

4/9/2011

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State offense accounted for three touchdowns but also committed three turnovers during the first scrimmage of spring ball, Saturday at the team's practice field.

Four different quarterbacks took snaps during the controlled scrimmage with redshirt freshman Garrett Safron receiving most of the duties. Safron completed 6-of-12 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Dominic Carmazzi was 2-of-9 for 121 yards and a TD. Tommy Edwards completed 3-of-6 passes for 62 yards and a score and freshman Jake Geringer was 2-for-3 for 12 yards.

"Overall, there was some good, bad and ugly," Sacramento State head coach Marshall Sperbeck said. "We lacked consistency but can use it as our first evaluation. We need to clean up for next week.

"I did think that the guys played hard and there were no injuries. This team continues to work well together with a common goal."

Safron led the offense during the opening two drives and helped lead the team to a score. The quarterback rushed for 26 yards on the opening play and was aided by a 23-yard rush from Curtis Shaw which brought the ball to the 15-yard line. From there, Safron rolled out and hit tight end Reese Heaslet in the flat and Heaslet ran untouched into the end zone.

The defense answered back on the third drive when JC transfer Minasa Kikau interepted Carmazzi in the end zone. The offense had moved into the red zone after a 55-yard pass from Carmazzi to Chase Deadder.

Three drives later, Matt Agaiava gathered up a loose ball off a botched handoff to give the defense its second turnover.

Momentum swung back to the offense on the very next play when redshirt freshman Chris Broadnax made a one-handed coach in the front of the end zone on a 25-yard pass from Edwards.

The final turnover came on the following drive when Kikau hauled in a tipped pass from Edwards for his second interception of the day.

The defense continued to apply pressure for the rest of the day. Zack Nash and Matt Lawrence combined for a sack on third down during a two-minute drive and Lawarence and Agaiava followed with a sack on fourth down to stop the drive.

The scrimmage ended when Carmazzi hit Broadnax for a 66-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline on 4th-and-11.
