SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State football team concluded its

first week of spring drills with a successful scrimmage Saturday

afternoon at the practice field. The defense shined in the contest,

intercepting a pass and recovering a fumble both for touchdowns. The

offense was led by freshman quarterback Ryan Leadingham and junior

running back Derard Barton.

Leadingham showed a strong arm and good poise while platooning with

junior Kevin Laird. Barton shared time in the backfield with

sophomore Brett Collins.

"For our first scrimmage I am happy," head coach John Volek said. "We

are still a little raw but we will work that out as practice

continues."

The team will play its second scrimmage on Saturday, March 31, at

10:30 a.m. The final scrimmage will be held at 6:05 p.m. on April

21. Both games will be played at Hornet Stadium.
