SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A team that lived in the shadows during the fall of 1967 guaranteed it will never be forgotten on Tuesday afternoon.
In 1967, the Sacramento State freshmen football team produced one of the more amazing seasons in college football. The team not only finished its season undefeated, it was also not scored upon, posting a shut out in each of its games.
To commemorate that season, former Hornet head freshmen football coach Bill Kutzer and players Charlie Bell, Mike DeAngelis and Brian Watson presented Sacramento State Director of Athletics Terry Wanless with a plaque that will hang in the Broad Athletic Fieldhouse. The plaque features a photo of the team and a listing of each of its victories along with the score of all games.
The group's success was not just limited to its freshman season. Many members of the team went on to play on the varsity team which went 8-3 in 1968 and advanced to the Junior Rose Bowl and was 8-2 in 1969.
