12/7/2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Former Sacramento State wide receiver Fred Otis Amey was signed by the Austin Wranglers of the Arena Football Leauge, it was announced today. Amey will make his AFL debut on March 4 when the Wranglers host the Las Vegas Gladiators.

Last season, Amey played in 11 games for the San Francisco 49ers as a wide receiver and punt returner. He became the first 49er in 12 years to score a touchdown on his first touch as he dashed 75 yards for a score on a punt return against the Rams. Amey was with the team through training camp until being released in the final cuts in late August.

During his career at Sacramento State, Amey was named to the AFCA All-America team following his senior season and was a three-time first team all-Big Sky Conference selection. Following his senior season, he also participated in the East-West Shrine Game.

During his career, Amey became just the second player in Div. I-AA history to record 4,000 career receiving yards and 6,000 career all-purpose yards. His career total of 4,049 receiving yards ranks fourth in Div. I-AA history and is the top mark in the Big Sky record book. His 248 receptions also rank in the Div. I-AA top 10 and are the second most in league history.

A four-year starter, Amey caught a pass in each of his 42 games. In 2004, he set the school record with 76 receptions and ranked second in school history with 1,186 receiving yards. He also broke the Sacramento State mark for single-game receptions with 15 grabs at Eastern Washington. The previous record of 14 had stood since 1968.

As a return specialist, Amey averaged nine yards per punt return and 21.2 yards per kickoff return. The Union City, Calif., native is also the only player in school history to return two punts for touchdowns during his career.

Amey joins Aaron Garcia as the only Hornets in the AFL. Garcia is currently the quarterback for the New York Dragons and has played in the league for 13 yeras. Amey will also be joined by his brother Vince who is a defensive lineman for the Arizona Rattlers.
