SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football team has added three additional members to its 2009 recruiting class, it was announced by head coach Marshall Sperbeck. The trio is comprised of offensive linemen Matthew Shinn and Nate Devan as well as defensive back Randy Fesser.
Shinn was a two-time all-Baseline League selection while a member of Los Osos High School in Alta Loma, Calif. As a senior, he also earned first team all-Southern Section Central Division honors and was named all-area by The Press-Enterprise. The 6-4, 277-pounder helped lead the Grizzlies to a 10-3 overall record in 2008 and a second-place finish in the Baseline League. The team also advanced to third round of the Southern Section playoffs.
Devan (6-6, 290) prepped at Chaparral High School in Temecula, Calif. As a senior, he earned all-valley honors after leading the team to a 12-2 overall record and a 5-0 mark in the Southwestern League. The Pumas’ only two losses came to eventual California Div. I champion Centennial, including a loss in the Southern Section championship game.
The lone junior college transfer of the group, Fesser spent the previous two seasons at Mendocino College in Ukiah, Calif. A two-year starter, he helped the Eagles to a Bay Valley League championship as a freshman while teaming with current Hornet cornerback Michael Casper in the secondary. As a sophomore, Fesser was credited with 38 total tackles, including one for loss. He also had three interceptions and seven pass break-ups.
The three signees join 12 other players who will enroll in the fall and seven midyear transfers that are currently attending Sacramento State. The Hornets begin their spring season on April 8 and their 2009 regular season on Sept. 5 at UNLV.
