UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES 2009 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A trip to Las Vegas, a renewal of an old rivalry and matchups against three NCAA Football Championship Series playoff participants highlight Sacramento State’s 2009 football schedule, which was announced today by Director of Athletics Terry Wanless.
The 11-game schedule begins on Sept. 5 when the Hornets travel to UNLV for their first meeting with the Rebels. UNLV ended 2008 with a 5-6 overall record, which included a win over Arizona State. The game marks the seventh consecutive season that the Hornets will face a Football Bowl Subdivision team and the second straight year against a squad from the Mountain West Conference. Last season, the Hornets fell at Colorado State, 23-20.
Sacramento State remains on the road the next week as the team will travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to take on Cal Poly for the first time since 2006. The Mustangs were ranked 10th in the final 2008 FCS poll by The Sports Network. The team posted an 8-3 mark during the year and advanced to the FCS playoffs.
Following a bye week, the Hornets will host Eastern Washington in their home opener on Sept. 26. The game against the Eagles, which will also mark the Big Sky Conference opener, will start at 6:05 p.m. Sacramento State returns to the road the following week with a contest at Portland State.
On Oct. 10, the Hornets will play their Homecoming game against Idaho State. Another road game, the fourth in the first six games, pits Sacramento State against FCS playoff participant Weber State on Oct. 17.
Back-to-back home games against Montana and Northern Colorado round out the month of October. The team welcomes the Grizzlies on Oct. 24. Montana was ranked second in the final FCS poll of the year after playing in the FCS championship game and ending the year with a 14-2 overall record.
Sacramento State concludes Big Sky play with road games at Northern Colorado (Nov. 7) and Montana State (Nov. 14).
The team’s final game of the year will come at home against UC Davis on Nov. 21 in the 56th-annual Causeway Classic. The Hornets defeated the Aggies, 29-19, last year at Aggie Stadium.
Sacramento State open its spring practice April 8. The annual Green-Gold game will take place on Sat., May 2. For season ticket information, call (916) 278-2222.
