SACRAMENTO, Calif.-- The Sacramento State football program announced its
team award winners at the annual year-end banquet Sunday afternoon. The
team MVP award was shared by senior running back Charles Roberts and
senior quarterback Ricky Ray. Senior wide receiver Scott Towne claimed
the offensive MVP award while junior Terence Wagner was given the
offensive line MVP.
Roberts ended his career with 6,553 rushing yards and set or tied 20
Sacramento State records, eight BIg Sky records and nine national
records. The Montclair, Calif., native was named co-Big Sky Conference
MVP this past season and was a three-time first team all-league
selection. Ray served as the team’s starting QB for the past two years
and holds the school career record with a 61.9 percent completion
percentage. This past season, he threw for 2,220 yards and 13
touchdowns. He also set a school record with 10 rushing scores.
Towne finished second on the team with 42 receptions for 716 yards. The
Stockton, Calif., native finished second in career receiving yards at
Sacramento State despite playing quarterback his first season and
missing at least one game each year due to injury. Wagner earned his
award after anchoring a young Hornet offensive line. The center has now
started all 33 games of his career and was named first team all-Big Sky
following the 2000 season.
Defensively, senior Anthony Daisley earned the defensive line MVP award
and junior Elton Gabourel was the team’s defensive back most valuable
player. Daisley led the team in tackles with 100 and tackles for loss
(19). The native of Rialto, Calif., was named first team all-Big Sky for
the second-straight season. Gabourel tied for the team lead with four
interceptions and was second on the squad with 76 tackles. The
cornerback also had four pass breakups, six tackles for loss and 0.5
sacks to earn first team all-league honors.
Senior Lamont Webb was named special teams MVP and redshirts Ryan
Leadingham and Ramon Payne were named scout team MVPs on offense and
defense, respectively. Webb, who was an honorable mention all-league
selection as a returner, set a Sacramento State single-season record
with 696 kickoff return yards. He also became the first Hornet to return
a kickoff for a touchdown since 1997 when he scampered 90 yards for a
score against Cal State Northridge.
Leadingham earned his award after quarterbacking the scout team offense.
The native of Covina, Calif., showed extreme poise for a true freshman
and will battle for the starting QB position in the fall. Payne played
defensive back for the scout team defense. A true freshman from San
Jose, Calif., Payne will fight to replace senior Tommy Williams in the
Hornet secondary next season.
