SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Senior Pablo Gonzales scored 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting to lead the Sacramento State men’s basketball team to a 122-81 victory over TCS Saturday afternoon in Hornet Gym. The game was the first of two exhibitions to be played by the Hornets before opening their regular season on Nov. 17.
Gonzales was joined in double-figures by seniors Rickie Glenn (16) and Rame Batta (13), junior Rene Jacques (15) and freshman Chris Armstrong (11).
Behind the new up-tempo offense and tenacious defensive style of first-year head coach Jerome Jenkins, the Hornets jumped to an early lead. TCS, however, fought its way back and held a slight lead until 12 minutes were left in the first half. From that point, Sacramento State outscored TCS, 43-27, to take a 55-40 lead into intermission.
In the second half, Gonzales added to the lead by scoring 10 of the team’s first 12 points. The Sacramento, Calif., native buried two of hisfour three-pointers in the opening five minutes of the half to give the team a 67-49 lead. The Hornets then added 15 unanswered points to build an 82-49 lead with 11:31 left on the clock.
Helping spark the run was senior Rickie Glenn. The forward tipped in a missed layup and then made four-straight free throws after TCS Derek Ford received two technical fouls and was ejected from the game.
All 14 of the Sacramento State players that played found their way into the scoring column. TCS was led by Dwight Crocker’s 23 points.
Sacramento State concludes its exhibition season on Nov. 11 against Oracle. The team will then take on Bethany College at home on Nov. 17 in its first regular season game of the year.
