JODY JOHNSON NAMED BIG SKY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

11/19/2007

OGDEN, Utah — Sacramento State’s Jody Johnson was selected as the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced today. The honor is the first for the senior in his career.

Johnson played a pivotal role in the Hornets’ 41-30 win over Idaho State on Nov. 17. The Corona, Calif., native recorded a career high eight tackles, including one for loss. He also broke up three passes and helped the team preserve its lead in the third quarter by intercepting a pass in the end zone.

Johnson also showcased his Big Sky championship speed by chasing down a receiver near the goal line despite beginning the play at least 30 yards away from the ball carrier. The defensive back also returned three kickoffs for 73 yards in the contest.

The Big Sky named Eastern Washington quarterback Matt Nichols as the Offensive Player of the Week and Montana kicker Dan Carpenter as the Special Teams Player of the Week.

The conference award is the second for Sacramento State this season. Linebacker Cyrus Mulitalo was named co-Defensive Player of the Week following the team’s win over Northern Arizona on Sept. 29.
