FOOTBALL FALLS SHORT IN 41-39 LOSS AT IDAHO STATE

10/27/2000

Idaho State jumped out to a 21-0 lead and held on for a 41-39 victory

Saturday night inside Holt Arena. Issac

Mitchell put the Bengals on the board with a four-yard

run on the first drive of the game. ISU

added to its advantage when Troy Bell scored from a

yard out and then took control of the

game when wide receiver DeRonn Finley hooked up

with David Steel for a 44-yard strike.

The Hornets closed the gap at the end of

the first quarter when Lamont Webb took a short

pass from Ricky Ray and stretched it

into an 80-yard TD. Idaho State, however, answered

early in the second quarter when

quarterback Shane Griggs hit Brett Fowler for a 16-yard TD

to stretch the lead to 28-6. Sacramento

State pulled within two touchdowns at the half when

Webb caught his second TD of the game

and kicker Jimmy Sanchez ran in the two-point

conversion.

After Finley returned a punt 85 yards

for a touchdown, the Hornets awakened. Mike Wooster

started the scoring with a nine-yard

score. Sanchez followed with a 41-yard field goal and

senior Anthony Daisley tacked on a

safety. Ray then scored on a quarterback sneak and

Sanchez added the extra point to make

the score, 35-33. Idaho State’s Nick Whitworth gave

the Bengals a 41-33 lead with 12:59 to

play before Charles Roberts scored on a two-yard run

(the two-point attempt failed).

Sacramento State had one final chance but Roberts fumbled

on the one-yard line and the ball was

recovered in the end zone by Idaho State.
