FORMER HORNET OTIS AMEY SIGNS WITH THE ATLANTA FALCONS
8/15/2007
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Former Sacramento State All-American Fred Otis Amey returned to the NFL after signing with the Atlanta Falcons on Aug. 11. Amey joins fellow former Hornets Lonie Paxton (New England), Marko Cavka (New York Jets) and Tyronne Gross (San Diego) in NFL training camps.
Amey last starred for Sacramento State in 2004. As a senior, he was named to the AFCA Div. I-AA All-America team as a return specialist. That season, he was also a first team all-Big Sky Conference selection after catching a school-record 76 passes for 1,186 yards and six touchdowns. His four-year career totals of 248 receptions, 4,049 receiving yards and 27 touchdowns are all records at Sacramento State. He also holds the school mark with 15 receptions in a game and 6,343 career all-purpose yards.
On a larger scale, he became just the third player in Div. I-AA history to record 4,000 career receiving yards and 6,000 all-purpose yards. His 4,049 receiving yards are also the most in Big Sky history.
Following his collegiate career, Amey was signed by the San Francisco 49ers as a undrafted free agent. He worked his way up the depth chart during training camp and eventually earned a spot on the active roster. His Cinderella story continued during the season opener against the St. Louis Rams when he returned a punt for a touchdown the first time he touched the ball in an NFL game.
Amey’s tenure with the 49ers ended during the last week of training camp in 2006 when he was released. Shortly after, he was signed by the Austin Wranglers of the Arena Football League and ranked second on the team in 2007 with 1,035 receiving yards and 28 touchdowns.
The Falcons’ next exhibition game will come on Friday, Aug. 17, at Buffalo.
