FORMER HORNET RICKY RAY NAMED CFL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
7/6/2007
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Ricky Ray did not lead the Edmonton Eskimos to win or a loss in the team’ season opening game against Winnipeg. However, in a rare Canadian Football League tie, Ray played well enough to earn the league’s first Offensive Player of the Week award of the 2007 season.
In a 39-39 draw against the Blue Bombers, the former Sacramento State quarterback completed 33-of-42 passes for 394 yards and five touchdowns with only one interception. Ray also added 34 rushing yards on four carries.
Ray is currently in his fifth season with the Eskimos after playing two years (1999-2000) at Sacramento State. In Edmonton, he has led the team to three Grey Cup appearances, including championship in 2003 and 2005 (where he was also the game’s MVP). In 2005, he broke Doug Flutie’s CFL record with 479 completions. He has also become the career completions leader in Edmonton, breaking the mark formerly held by Warren Moon.
Ray’s performance in the season opener overshadowed an amazing effort by his former Hornet teammate Charles Roberts. The Blue Bomber running back rushed for 93 yards and found the end zone four times during the game.
