The Sacramento State football team will conclude its 2006 season on Saturday, Nov. 18, against UC Davis in the 53rd-Annual Causeway Classic. The game against the Aggies will begin at 1:05 p.m. from Toomey Field on the UC Davis campus.
The broadcast of the game can be heard on KSAC 1240 AM with Jason Ross and Steve McElroy calling the action. The pair are currently in their 10th season as the radio voices of Sacramento State football. For those outside of the Sacramento area, the broadcast can also be accessed via the internet on www.hornetsports.com.
Saturday’s game will also be televised on Comcast SportsNet West in Northern California. Jim Kozimor will handle the play-by-play while former Cal quarterback Mike Pawlawski provides the color commentary. This year marks the third straight season that Comcast has televised the Causeway Classic. Comcast SportsNet West can be seen on channel 34 in most locations as well as on channel 656 for DirecTV and channel 409 for Dish Network.
This year’s game marks the first time that the Causeway Classic has been played in November since Nov. 13, 1993. Sacramento State heads into the game with a 4-6 overall record. The Hornets concluded Big Sky Conference play last Saturday with a 13-7 loss to 21st-ranked Portland State. The loss snapped the team’s two-game winning streak and evened its Big Sky record at 4-4. That mark is the second-best in school history and guarantees that Sacramento State will finish no worse than fifth in the nine-team league.
Linebacker Cyrus Mulitalo was the story for the Hornets against Portland State. The sophomore had a game-high 13 tackles and also scored the team’s only touchdown with a 3-yard rush in the second quarter. The Hornets’ first-half shutout marked the first time that Sacramento State has held the opponents scoreless in the opening two quarters since Oct. 7, 2000.
UC Davis is 4-5 overall after dropping its last two games in heart-breaking fashion. On Oct. 28, South Dakota State rallied to win 22-21 after trailing 21-7. One week later, North Dakota State overcame a 24-0 whole to win 28-24. The Bison scored with four seconds remaining to win the game. The Aggies must win on Saturday as well as the following week against 14th-ranked San Diego to continue their streak of 36 consecutive winning seasons.
Sacramento State trails the all-time series against UC Davis, 37-16. The teams have met every year since 1954, including twice in 1988.
