FOOTBALL ENDS HOME SCHEDULE AGAINST PORTLAND STATE ON SATURDAY

11/6/2006

Riding a two-game winning streak, the Sacramento State football team will look to match its best Big Sky Conference record in school history as it hosts 23rd-ranked Portland State on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 4:05 p.m. The Hornets enter the contest with a 4-5 overall record and a 4-3 mark in league games. Last week, Sacramento State earned its second road win of the season as it defeated Idaho State, 22-14.

Prior to the start of the game, the University will honor its 11 seniors who will be playing their final home game at Hornet Stadium.

The broadcast of the game can be heard on KSAC 1240 AM with Jason Ross and Steve McElroy calling the action. The pair are currently in their 10th season as the radio voices of Sacramento State football. For those outside of the Sacramento area, the broadcast can also be accessed via the internet on www.hornetsports.com.

Saturday’s game will also be on Big Sky TV. The first-year package broadcasts all Big Sky Conference home games over the internet. Audio from both teams should be made available. For more information, log on to www.bigskytv.org.

Numerous milestones will be at stake for Sacramento State against the Vikings. With a win, the Hornets will equal the best Big Sky record by a Hornet team since the University joined the league in 1996. The 2000 team posted a 5-3 record and the next best mark had been 3-4 prior to Saturday’s win at Idaho State. The current team will also have a chance to become the first Sacramento State squad to win three consecutive games since moving to Div. I-AA in 1993.

Last week against Idaho State, Marcel Marquez threw for a career-best 396 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Hornets. Marquez spread the ball between eight receivers and both Andre Taylor (135) and Jason Barnes (116) each had 100-plus yards. Sacramento State did most of its damage on third down, converting 12-of-21 chances while the Hornet defense limited Idaho State to 4-of-13.

Portland State is 6-4 overall and 5-2 in league. Two of the Vikings’ four losses have come against Div. I-A Cal and Oregon. The team also has a win over New Mexico.

The series with the Vikings is one of the longest in school history. The two teams first met in 1965 and have played annually since 1994. Portland State leads the all-time series, 16-9, and has won 11 of the last 12 meetings.
