FOOTBALL IMPROVES TO 4-3 IN THE BIG SKY WITH ROAD WIN AT IDAHO STATE

11/4/2006

POCATELLO, Idaho -- Sacramento State junior quarterback Marcel Marquez threw for a career-high 396 yards and wide receivers Andre Taylor (135 yards) and Jason Barnes (116 yards) both went over the century mark to lead the Hornets to a 22-14 victory over Idaho State in a Big Sky Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Holt Arena.

Marquez, who threw touchdown passes to Ray Navar (six yards) and Taylor (38 yards) in the second quarter, finished the game 25-for-44 with two touchdowns and one interception. His 396 passing yards were the second most in Sacramento State Div. I history (1993-pres.), trailing only Tony Corbin’s 406 yards vs. Saint Mary’s in 1995. Coincidentally, Corbin threw his 406 yards on Nov. 4, exactly 11 years ago today.

Taylor and Barnes combined to become the first Sacramento State receivers to go over 100 yards in the same game since 2001 when Fred Amey (160) and Michael Johnson (104) both went over the century mark against Northern Arizona.

With the victory, Sacramento State won its second road game of the season (the most since 2002), and improved to 4-5 overall and 4-3 in the Big Sky. The Hornets’ four conference wins are the most since the 2000 squad went 5-3 in the league. In addition, Sacramento State’s four victories overall are the most since the 2002 squad finished the year 5-7.

With the loss, Idaho State, which dropped to 5-6 all-time against the Hornets, fell to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

Sacramento State’s defense limited Idaho State to just 209 yards and 14 points. The Bengals’ 14 points were the second fewest allowed by a Hornet defense in a Big Sky road game since the team joined the conference in 1996.

The Hornets opened the scoring with 7:31 left in the first quarter after Juan Gamboa kicked his first of a career-high three field goals, a 48-yarder that gave Sacramento State the early lead. Idaho State bounced right back on the next drive when Ken Cornist rushed for a 10-yard score to put the Bengals on top, 7-3, with 2:54 left in the opening quarter.

However, Sacramento State owned the second quarter, outscoring Idaho State, 16-0, including touchdown passes of six yards to Navar (14:28) and 38 yards to Taylor (6:01). Gamboa added a late 35-yard field goal to give the Hornets a 19-7 halftime lead.

Sacramento State added another field goal from Gamboa (39 yards) midway through the fourth quarter to take a game-high 15-point lead (22-7). Idaho State’s Akilah Lacey caught a 23-yard touchdown pass with 2:54 left in the game, and the Bengals recovered the ensuing onsides kick. However, Sacramento State’s defense came through again, stopping the Bengals on a fourth-and-three play from the Hornets’ 31-yard line to seal the victory.

Sacramento State’s defense, which received eight tackles from Cyrus Mulitalo, seven from Tony DeMonaco and six (including a sack) from Mike Brannon, limited the Big Sky’s leading rusher (Idaho State’s Josh Barnett) to 71 yards. The Hornets’ defense has now allowed just 23 points over the last two weeks.

Sacramento State is currently in fourth-place in the Big Sky following Portland State''s victory over Northern Arizona today.

The Hornets return to action on Saturday, Nov. 11, as the team plays its final home game of the season against the Vikings at 4:05 p.m.
