OFFENSE SCORES TWO TOUCHDOWNS IN FINAL SCRIMMAGE

4/13/2006

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — Running backs Kris Daniels and Jon Alanis each scored a touchdown to help lead the Sacramento State offense in the football team’s final scrimmage during spring practice.

Daniels shared the load in the backfield with sophomore Torrell Baker and responded with 11 carries for 81 yards. The senior scored the first touchdown of the scrimmage on a 52-yard run around the right end and down the sideline. Baker added 17 carries for a team-high 89 yards.

All three quarterbacks saw action during the game. Junior college transfer Tim Brockwell opened under center but completed just 3-of-10 passes for 13 yards. Returner Crosby Wehr paced the team, going 5-for-8 for 87 yards and a score. Three of Wehr’s completions went for 20 yards or more, including a 25-yard strike to Billy White which set up a 5-yard pass to Alanis for the second touchdown.

Freshman Austin Sanford was also effective, going 6-for-9 for 59 yards. Sanford led the final drive of the scrimmage which began at the team’s own 5-yard line. The drive began with three rushes from Baker before Sanford found Baker for a 7-yard reception. He then completed a 6-yard pass to Ryan Coogler and a 37-yard strike to a wide open Cole Hamlett. After a 23-yard rush from Baker took the ball to the 4, the offense stalled and settled for a Juan Gamboa field goal.

Alanis led a group of eight receivers who caught a pass. The JC transfer caught two passes for 26 yards. Sophomore Bobby Mooshagian also caught two for 19 and Baker had two for 14.

Defensively, the unit had six tackles for loss and also applied constant pressure in the backfield.

Gamboa made both of his field goal attempts (32, 40) and was also 2-for-2 on PATs. He did, however, have one punt blocked by Phillip Perry.

Sacramento State opens its 2006 season on Thursday, Aug. 31, at Boise State. The team’s first home game will come on Sat., Sept. 16, against Cal Poly.
